Edited by Robert Pledge, it includes a textual memoir by Li adapted from interviews and a history of the Cultural Revolution written by Jacques Menasche.

Published by Phaidon in 2003, it has been translated into six languages.

In 2004, it received the Overseas Press Club of America's Olivier Rebbot Award.
